A Woman's Bum is like the Moon…
Entertainment - Theater
Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre: 11 - 23 Dec (DURBAN)

A Woman's Bum is like the Moon is a cutting edge one-woman show about contemporary living in existing circumstances - a 21st century fairy tale, written and performed by Samantha Gray.

It's about absent fairies and giant cock ups: these are "Grimm" fairy tales from the very large mouths of Alice, Wendy, Dorothy, Cinderella and Snow White.

This piece of performance art is written and performed by actress, writer, poet and painter Samantha Gray, with directorial assistance from Karen Logan. Samanta and Karen have invited guest artists to perform with Samantha - poets, musicians, artists and singers.

It's about women learning to be necessary bitches in pienk broeks, expressing their insecurities as 21st century women. It's about celebrating lipstick and cellulite, all the while acknowledging, accepting, and to a large degree exposing their faults and flaws, which make them real, vital women without the help of magic wands.

Ask yourself: what if Cinderella was a cloistered tart? And Cinderella's stepmother a woman who'd been through the mill and just wanted to help? Idealistic Wendy waits at a window for bloody Peter who never comes. But luckily Dorothy found her tin man a heart. Snow White wasn't like the others… she didn't scream. The seven dwarves' case docket was conveniently misplaced.

Samantha says: "These are acute observations into women who have surrounded me, and of course the woman I have been, the woman I am, and the woman I probably will become. The piece dissects women from a man's perspective and also from an introspective viewpoint."

Samantha completed her Diploma in Acting for Film and Television at CityVarsity in 2003 and has her Associate Diploma from Trinity College London and is not a feminist but a 'womanist'.

"It's all about perspective. Life is all about perspective, about women taking responsibility for their own lives - whatever circumstances they find themselves in -accepting, appreciating, achieving."

Are happy endings and fairy tales what we make them? "I am a woman. This feels good. Good. My piece is about identification, and not absolution," says Samantha.

As Robert Greig, Arts Editor of the Sunday Independent said after Samantha's Grahamstown performance "What mattered was that after seeing it I was not the same person who had entered the theatre. I was reminded of what theatre could be."
