DEKAF for On Broadway
Entertainment - Theater

Dekaf is about a black, white comedy… about blacks who think like whites… told by a black guy… who sounds white.

Contrary to popular belief there is a new generation of black people who don’t bitch about the ‘struggle’, can swim, aren’t hated by dogs and didn’t vote for Jacob Zuma! Dekaf will take you into the world of a black man who was raised in the suburbs, educated in a public school system, dates white woman and listens to Josh Groban!

Dekaf made its debut at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival 2009 under the directorship of comedian David Newton. The show filled its capacity venue and gathered favourable reviews from the local press who called Ngesi a brave new face in stand-up, delivering top quality laughs.

Sivuyile 'Siv' Ngesi is a 25-year-old actor from Gugulethu in Cape Town. Acting came early to Siv and at ten years old he toured Asia with Les Miserables in the role of Gavroshe. Since then he has landed film roles in Invictus, Cape of Good Hope, After the Rain, Love in Africa, Zeenon z3, World Unseen and Schweitzer. He is also recognisable from the popular television programme Khululeka, as well as The Adventures of Sinbad, Double Shift and Interrogation Room. Siv’s best TV credit to date must be his scenes with Kiefer Sutherland in ‘24’ (for more info go to www.iamsiv.com). He is also currently a lead in a new television mini series called League of Glory, airing from this month on MNet.

Siv’s theatre experience is extensive, with amateur and professional productions under his belt including Sizwe Banzi is Dead, The Island, Sex and the Citi Golf , Star Wors, Off Your Trolley, Butlers and Brandy and most recently Dekaf, which he co-wrote with David Newton.

Dekaf is a bold production from the comedic mind of David Newton whose show credits include Politically Incorrect; Defending the Laid Man & Laugh. Newton is an actor, director and producer and has been described as one of South Africa’s super-star comedians. He has become one of South Africa’s most bankable comics - achieving this by making his comedy so appealing to his fans through his ability to speak directly and frankly about situations that happen to all of us. His comedy material is so true to life that he effortlessly makes audiences relate to just about every subject and comedic angle.

Newton has had sell-out shows at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival (2005-2009), was the winner of the National Arts Festival’s ‘Best Stand-up Comedian’ award 2008 and most successful comedy performer at Fest ‘09. He has performed at the Cape Town International Comedy Festival (2006- Danger Zone & 2007- Main Arena), the Old Mutual Comedy Encounters (2009), SABC3’s Comedy Showcase (2003), is regularly played on the Fresh Drive Comedy Minutes on 5fm (national airplay) and has directed all three of his own one-man shows.

David Newton Productions has produced three full feature length comedy DVD’s, namely Defending The Laid Man that was nominated for a Fleur Du Cap Award Best Performance award in 2006, Politically Incorrect (nominated for a SA Comedy Awards for Stand-up Comedy of the Year in 2007, Nothing Bt The Truth - a 100min collaboration of the best of David’s three one-man shows (Defending the Laid Man, Politically Incorrect & Laugh), and including Sivuyile Ngesi as the opening act. Nothing But the Truth launched nationwide in November 2009 and is available in all major retailers and online.
