Jacaranda 94.2 partnered with Big Concerts on another musical on a grand scale. "Saturday Night Fever is so much more than a musical for the station and our listeners. It's an emotional experience involving an era of hip-swaying, slick, funky grooves and don't forget that famous 'Strut' and white suit of John Travolta! We are also extremely proud to be a part of a production where the cast has been handpicked from South Africa's finest entertainers," says an excited Alan Khan, CEO of Jacaranda 94.2.
The story is based on the defining 1977 film SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, which starred John Travolta as Tony Manero, a troubled Brooklyn youth whose weekend activities are dominated by visits to a local discotheque. While in the disco, Tony is the king, and the visits help him to temporarily forget the reality of his life: a deadend job, clashes with his unsupportive and squabbling parents, racial tensions in the local community, and his associations with a gang of dead-beat friends. SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is the classic story of hope over tragedy with the electric combination of music and dance fused with a blistering soundtrack and some of musical theatres most groundbreaking choreography ever. The musical is both directed and choreographed by the renowned Arlene Phillips who has received numerous theatre award nominations including a Tony, two Oliviers, a National Broadway and a FaNY. Awards include an MTV, a Drama Desk, a Bafta, and an Emmy for best choreography. The multi Grammy Award winning music behind the film, combined with it's gripping storyline captured the imagination of millions, making SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and its legendary collection of songs the iconic movie for a generation. The movie significantly helped to popularize disco music around the world, and made Travolta a household name. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, featuring disco songs by the Bee Gees, became the best selling movie soundtrack ever, featuring such famous songs as: Stain' Alive, Night Fever, More than a Woman, You Should be Dancing, How Deep is Your Love? The music of Saturday Night Fever is the most important milestone in the history of the Bee Gees, a singing trio of brothers - Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb - that became one of the most successful musical acts of all time. Their 1997 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame citation says "Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees". Such is the quality of the songs it is hard not to believe they weren't written specifically for the stage. The spectacular set with dramatic backdrops of New York and the Manhattan skyline will be shipped in from London, complete with the iconic lit dancefloor and mirror ball! The show will include 30 of our country's hottest young performers. From the very start the audience will be tapping their feet and singing along... The dance routines are slicker than Tony's hair grease and full of energy. Saturday Night Fever opens at Gold Reef City's Lyric Theatre Opens on the 8th 0f April for a limited season only.
