The Birdcage comes to Milnerton Playhouse

Most people will remember the iconic movie, The Birdcage, which brought a political scandal into a Miami drag club and created a raucously hilarious comedy about an unorthodox family. Written by Elaine May, “The Birdcage” starring Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane and Calista Flockhart amongst others and at the time set the record for the top grossing movie with openly gay characters of all time.

This stage adaptation, produced by the Constantiaberg Players and adapted and directed by the CATA award winning Barrie Howard stars Mark Wilkes and David Waugh as Armand and Albert respectively. Bringing the hilarity to life on stage this production presents all the components of the movie in a live setting – prepare to enjoy onstage drag artists, peeps into the nightclub, a ‘family’ occasion that becomes a tad complicated and characters that are memorable.

All the favourite moments are captured from the movie and this adaptation was first performed at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg in December 2017.Now coming to the Milnerton Playhouse for a short run in February and billed as “The funniest, most outrageous, campest comedy you’ll see this year.”

Don’t miss the opportunity to see it at the community theatre.Armand & Albert have built the perfect life for themselves tending to their gaudy Miami “drag” club. But their pastel tranquility is shaken when Armand`s son Val announces that he is getting married to the daughter of ultra-conservative Senator Keeley… and they`re all getting together for dinner!.. Can Armand and Albert transform themselves into Mr. and Mrs. “Family Values” in time? It`ll take the performance of their lives, but they will do anything and everything to pull the chiffon over Keeley`s eyes. Agador, their flamboyant Guatemalan housekeeper morphs into a Greek butler for the evening and when Val’s mother gets caught in traffic things hot up as a ‘mother’ figure appears dramatically to save the day.

This show will have you laughing in the aisles!
