Hairspray, the feel-good stage musical returns to Cape Town for a two week run in February. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score, as well as four Laurence Olivier Awards, Hairspray is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. An adapted film version was released in 2007 starring John Travolta, Michelle Pheiffer, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron and Nikki Blonsky.
The 1950s are definitely out, and change is in the air! It’s 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement and Tracy Turnblad, the quirky lovable plus-size teen with the plus-sized hairdo, has only one desire – to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show on national television. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but faces discrimination because of her weight, her choice in friends and her hairdo. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and use her influence to push for social change and racial integration in the show…. all without denting her ‘do!
Hairspray’s timeless message is that everyone should be treated equally regardless of social, cultural and physical differences. With memorable songs such as Good Morning, Baltimore and You Can’t Stop The Beat, this foot-tapping, happy musical is proof that the world can be changed with can of hairspray and Rock ’n’ Roll!
Hairspray debuted on Broadway in 2002, starring the magnificent Harvey Fierstein. The play was based on the Pope of Trash John Waters’ original 1988 film of the same name, starring the glorious, immortal Divine, as well as Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry. The film has become a camp classic.
This Cape Town production is staged by the Pinelands Players, a community theatre society based in Pinelands, Cape Town, with a long, proud, award winning history, spanning more than 70 years. Hairspray is directed by Neil Leachman and is choreographed by Jared Schaedler and Laura Bosman.
