Miss Drag South Africa 2019 Dates Announced

Details of this year’s Miss Drag South-Africa Pageant have been revealed. In keeping with her promise to make Miss DRAG SA a truly national event, Pageant Director, Enigma von Hamburg announced that the finale of this year’s contest will be held at the State Theatre in Pretoria on 4th October, which is also the night before Pretoria Pride. This is the third in the series, with the finales previously being hosted in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape and Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The announcement was made at a Benefit Dinner held at Berta’s in Woodstock, Cape Town earlier this month, which was attended by members of the press and Drag Royalty, including the current title holder Miss Vicky, of Port Elizabeth.

Miss Drag SA is the brainchild of the irrepressible Queen Enigma Von Hamburg who is well known on the Cape Town pageant circuit. She has accumulated over 70 winner’s sashes since 2005, including the prestigious titles of Miss Cape Town Pride in 2008 and the inaugural Miss Gay Western Cape in 2009. She is also the director of the LGBT Cape Peninsula Pageant whose aim is to create positive awareness in the LGBTI family, and to help fight homophobia and related prejudice in the broader community.

Enigma says that Miss Drag South Africa, as a national pageant, “celebrates diversity and thus acts as an inclusive pageant to drag queens, gender queer and trans bodies. The platform highlights the aim of ‘Drag for a Purpose’ to inspire ordinary people that carry out extraordinary things to advocate the advancement of LGBTQA+ rights, drag culture, serve as agents for change and uplift their communities by serving as positive role models.” Finalists are required to initiate community projects that will touch lives of fellow South Africans, and these projects are scored as part of the competition.

Entries have opened but close on Friday 15th March. Contestants chosen will be invited on a weekend boot camp at a place to be announced on the first weekend in May 2019, in preparation of the title and the run-up towards to the gala evening on 4th October 2019. Enigma promise an evening of top class entertainment and hopes that more people will get involved with the 2019 edition, especially in terms of sponsorships. “I have a dream that one day, the pageant can also be on the level of Miss South-Africa!”
