Wendy la Rosa, an educator from Mitchell’s Plain, beat eleven other contestants to be crowned the 10th Miss Gay Western Cape, at a sold out glittering gala event in Cape Town on Saturday 3rd November. This drag pageant, which was revived in 2009, has become the most prestigious event on the Mother City’s ever expanding pageant circuit.
The twelve pageant queens strutted their stuff in Fantasy Wear, Swimwear, and Evening Wear before a very partisan and vocal crowd who were not afraid to let the judges know who their favourite queens were. The standard of entrants was very high this year, which made it difficult to choose the Top Five Queens. As always, it was the question and answer session that separated the men from the boys, as it were. The fact that they were all articulate as well as gorgeous made the decision even more difficult. But in the end, it was the bubbly and vivacious Wendy La Rosa of the wide smile who was made Queen for 2018. Prior to the event, La Rosa said that Miss Gay Western Cape “is my 4 year degree as I intend on graduating this year”. She graduated with Honours!
Veteran pageant queen Layla Raja Novacek, was crowned First Princess, with Adrienne Galagatsi winning Second Princess. Skyler Barrymore, who also made it to the Top Five, was bestowed the honour of Miss Gay Humanitarian for her community work. Stunning newcomer Zoe Cox, a firm crowd favourite, won Miss Body Beautiful.
As always, some of Cape Town’s best drag artistes provided entertainment. The sensational Manila von Teez brought the house down with another Hi-Energy routine. Angel Lalamore, arguably the best lip-syncher in the land, performed some of her greatest hits. But it was gender-fuck queer Burlesque cabaret artiste Miss Ina Propriate who delivered the outstanding performance of the evening. She is someone to watch in future.
Pageant Directors Mark Donogue and Barry Reid are to be congratulated on another fantastic slick show. And Long Live the Queen, until next year at least!
