The opening of a new gay venue can only be good news! In the last twelve months, three venues have closed in Cape Town alone (Amsterdam Bar, Beaulah, and Babylon) for various reasons. So the launch of a new bar in the ever diminishing Gay Village is most welcome.
The Social Bar is housed at 18 Jarvis Street in de Waterkant. If that address sounds familiar, it’s because the Hot House is in the same building. The Social Bar is on the top floor, located on what used to be the terrace of the world renowned men’s steam room. Having an open air space on a beautiful terrace with a splendid view of the harbour and Table Bay beyond is a major attraction for any bar in the Mother City. Seating in the outside area is around bar tables with bar stools, while the interior is furnished with comfy sofas. The large bar is well stocked and service is quick and friendly. There is a small dance floor if one is inclined to shake ones booty. On opening night, Cape Town institution Spinsista Mitzi was behind the decks, but most of the gay glitterati in attendance were content with chatting and catching up. It’s good to have a space where one can actually have a conversation without shouting.
The Social Bar is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 5.00pm to 2.00am, so it’s a very good spot for sundowners and watching the sun set over the harbour, or for warming up before hitting the clubs in the area. The venue will be open every day during the holiday season from 22nd to 31st December. There is no cover charge, and women are welcome. There is free Wi-Fi so you can check who’s on Grindr if you really have to. The Social Bar is definitely the new hot spot to hang out in.
