The 12 day Cape Town Pride Festival got off to a rousing start on Saturday at the Mr and Miss Cape Town Pride Pageant, held at the filled to capacity Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone. This is one of the most popular and widely anticipated events on the Pride calendar and it did this year it was a runaway and runway success.
There was a record 17 men competing for the title of Mr Cape Town Pride. Usually it is a struggle for organisers to get even half a dozen contestants to participate. 21 queens competed for the Miss Pride crown. The boisterous and partisan audience watched all the contestants strut their stuff in Swimwear and then Evening Wear. Top class entertainment was provided by Being It Dance Project, winner of Rising Star in Music award Jarrad Ricketts, The Gurl Group which consisted of four former Miss Pride Title holders (Kat Gilardi, Manila von Teez, Wendy la Rosa and Laylah Raja Novacek), and the extraordinary Ina Propriette who thrilled the crowed with a gender-queer vogue extravaganza.
Marvin Leigh Ross, a fashion designer from Strand, was crowned Mr Cape Town Pride 2019. There was some drama in the ladies section, where for the first time in Cape Town drag herstory, there was a tie for third place where Adrienne Galagatsi and stunning newcomer Destiny Divine shared the 2nd Princess sash. Gabriella Garcia Marques came in second. The Miss Cape Town Pride 2019 crown was clinched by Maxine Wild, a model and makeup artiste from Belhar. The new Pride Royalty will be taking pride of place at the Cape Town Pride Parade this coming Saturday 2nd March.
