Seven Deadly Sins

Submitted by Barry Lowe

Let’s talk about the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ for a moment. Manufactured by the Catholic clergy over the centuries to impose the Church’s will on its superstitious flock, it went up and down like a young man’s erection, until it was finally codified as wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. St. Paul, always one to have a sin thesaurus beside him as he penned his behavioral proscriptions, listed, in his Epistle to the Galatians, seventeen before he ran out of labels and added the all-encompassing ‘and such like’ to cover things his fertile imagination hadn’t conjured as yet.

Concentrate on one particular ‘sin’: lust. One of my favourites. And, if research is to be believed, one of mankind’s favourites as well. It’s been suggested that the male of the species thinks about sex every seven seconds. I don’t know about you but I’d be bloody exhausted, falling down dizzy as the blood rushed to my cock that frequently. True, I suspect most of us appraise people in the street as prospective sex partners as we pass. I know I do it to while away the boredom while waiting for a train or a bus.

But recent revelations have put paid to the seven seconds – that figure has probably been confused with the time it takes most men to come – and have come up with the more mundane nineteen times a day. Not sure how scientists source these figures but it must make for fascinating research. I wonder, too, if they split ‘men’ into gay, straight and bi because American fundamentalist pundits would have us believe “the average homosexual is not controlled by reason”, and “it’s really a life controlled by this lust, this passion that has kind of overwhelmed them”. That was the opinion of one Steve Crampton on the anti-gay television program of Matt Barber of the Liberty Counsel, a non-profit public interest law firm and ministry that provides free legal assistance in defense of “Christian religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, and the traditional family”. My guess is he’s not talking about the lust for knowledge in this context because he sure ain’t guilty of that one.

Barber added his two cents worth of support, stating “sex-centric” gays “define their entire identity based on aberrant sexual behaviors and sexual temptations and acting on those temptations”. Hmm, sounds mighty like straight men as well. The very men that sit around in a television studio and discuss these topics with a ‘straight’ face when they could be out in the world giving in to their heterosexual (or closeted gay) lust. What they are doing, of course, is as old as the world itself: they’re demonising the enemy just like countries do during a war. The enemy in this case is the juggernaut that is same-gender marriage. The simplistic solution is to paint the enemy as depraved, immoral, and unreasonable.

Paint away because millions of men around the world, at the precise moment you’re pontificating, are giving in to their natural instincts, tugging their dicks while fantasising about the college jock, sucking dick through a hole in the wall, opening their legs wide for their boyfriend’s fist, or simply kissing and cuddling in the privacy of their bedroom.
