450 Authors Say NO to Trump

26 May 2016

Over in the USA hundreds of popular mainstream authors like Stephen King, Michael Chabon and Edmund White lent their names to an online letter/petition taking Donald Trump — presumptive Republican presidential nominee - to task.

The letter called "An Open Letter to the American People" lays out a few basic reasons for opposing Donald Trump's candidacy:

  • Because we believe that knowledge, experience, flexibility, and historical awareness are indispensable in a leader;
  • Because neither wealth nor celebrity qualifies anyone to speak for the United States, to lead its military, to maintain its alliances, or to represent its people;
  • Because the rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response....

Publishing this article for Queerlife South Africa's American readers is of course, preaching to the choir since it has been determined time and time again that Trump's followers are swayed neither by reason, nor truth. Still, it's a much more eloquent argument than a Queer South African's - "You guys, he's just the fucking worst."

If you are American and agree that Donald Trump is a greedy menace you can add your name to the petition here.
