Moldova Goes Anti-Gay

9 June 2016

Another country to put on your "Do Not Visit List". Over in Europe Moldova may soon pass Russian styled anti-gay laws.

Moldova's version of a homosexual ‘propaganda’ law is currently before its Parliament and the Culture and Education Committee has already given its approval. A ban against LGBTI's is currently in place in a number of Moldovan cities already.

If it passes the final stages and is made law, the Bill would see fines imposed for spreading “homosexual propaganda” to minors on the internet, in the media and in public meetings.

The Bill was brought to the table by the Parliament’s largest party, the Socialist Party, exactly four years after the country adopted a European Union-backed anti-discrimination law.

“Three years after the Moldovan Parliament annulled an anti-propaganda law, opportunistic politicians unfortunately again seek to scapegoat LGBTI people,” says Ulrike Lunacek MEP, Co-President of the European Union Intergroup on LGBTI Rights. “This is very worrying.”

“However, as a European state cherishing European values of freedom, equality and non-discrimination, I am confident Moldova and the majority of her lawmakers, will resist the Russian-inspired anti-propaganda bill.”
