Road tests and reviews of the latest Porsche models available in South Africa

2016 Porsche 718 Cayman coupe

The new Porsche 718 Cayman coupe range will hit South African markets in September this year.

You might remember that the Cayman is now called the 718 Cayman, same as the 718 Boxster. The car will come with two new engines of different sizes, along with a complete redesign and new equipment. And being cheaper than the 718 Boxster means it is the entry-level Porsche for anyone who wants to get into the sports car brand.

So the car features a new-look front end with more prominent air intakes, both front and sides, new bi-xenon headlights as standard and LED headlights as options. LED daytime running lights are part of the package.

The side view shows some sporty wings and side sills, while wider tyres prove performance intent. The rear end comes with new taillights with 3-D technology.

Inside drivers and passengers will be greeted by a familiar three-circle information panel behind the steering wheel, although it has been redesigned.

A new multifunction steering wheel, air vents and fewer buttons ensure a cleaner interior environment. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is standard and comes with a 150-Watt sound system, while satellite navigation and the like can be purchased as well.

As previously mentioned, there are two engines underpinning the powertrains. At the bottom is a new 2.0-litre flat four-cylinder with a turbocharger that produces a healthy 221kW of power and 380Nm of torque between 1,950rpm and 4,500rpm. It is capable of a satisfying 0 – 100km/h sprint of 4.7 seconds with the PDK and Sport Chrono Package, topping off at 275km/h.

The 2.5-litre turbo boxer 718 Cayman S powers up to 257kW, with torque of 420Nm available between 1,900rpm and 4,500rpm. Porsche reckons it will silently scream from standstill to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 285km/h.
