Out and proud British pop icon, Sir Elton John says excluding the LGBTI community from the fight against HIV and Aids will only increase the spread of the virus.

He was speaking at the International Aids Conference at the Durban ICC last week and also said gay and lesbian people are discriminated against while Aids doesn’t discriminate.

While Africa is the continent hardest hit by the HIV and Aids epidemic, the subject of homosexuality remains taboo in numerous African countries.

Sir Elton John says his foundation will work tirelessly to reach these communities:

“I’m gonna help all the LGBT that find it very difficult to be LGBT, to know that we are on their side. We will fight for them.”

He announced his Aids foundation has partnered with two first time recipients of the LGBTI fund, including the Global Forum on MSM and HIV’s Ifeanyi Orazulike.
