Youth Development Honours for Pietermaritzburg gay activist

Ndumiso Gwala (pictured), from the Pietermaritzburg Gay and Lesbian Network, has been selected to participate in a youth development camp for young people across the world, hosted by the Whizzkids Academy in Edendale.

Whizzkids assists young people through sports, psychosocial support and activities and helps empower them through team building, forming friendships and keeping the youngsters active and off the street and are encouraged to share ideas on how to empower themselves.

South Africa, Germany, Zambia and Ghana will host camps that will share information which will to help empower them through sport and team-building activities.

The project will run for two years and six young people from the Greater Edendale areas, from various organisation have been selected to be part of this project.

Gwala has been working in the community for a long time and currently works at the Edendale Lay Ecumenical Center as a lay councillor and project assistant for the Zenzele Youth Project.

He will be giving information he learns from this camp back to the community and develop new projects and activities to help build resilience and promote personal growth.

“This really is going to be a good experience. I can’t wait to meet people from the different countries with different cultures and learn as much as I can from them.”

The project will host its first youth camp in Pietermaritzburg from 20 to 28 February. The second camp will be in Germany from the beginning of July, and then Zambia and Ghana. Camps will be rotating in these four countries.
